What to Expect

What to Expect

What should I expect at the service?

At all Bahá’í activities in Jersey City, you can expect a warm, loving atmosphere where many types of people will be present, but everyone’s views are respected. Whether you’re hanging out with us at a devotional gathering, community group, or children’s class, we hope you’ll feel right at home.

Diversity: The Bahá’í Faith is a community open to all people, regardless of where they are in their spiritual journey or their religious background. This is a great place to meet a diverse group of people and become a part of a supportive community that reaches out to those who are hurting, in need, or who just want to belong to something bigger than themselves.

Relevance: One of the special things about the Bahá’í teachings is that they are specifically relevant to the issues that humanity faces today. In addition, we also discover truths as a community by exploring the Holy Writings of the Bible and the Qur’an. One thing is for sure: You’ll definitely find the teaching both uplifting and applicable to your life.

Real connections: One of our main goals for every community activity is for people to be able to connect with God and with each other. We’d love to get a chance to know you better, see what kind of needs you might have, and how we can serve you better.

What should I wear?

In general, the theme is weekend casual. It’s rare to see full suits (unless someone has just come straight from work) or bikinis. Basically, just make sure you’re comfortable.

What’s available for my kids?

Kids are welcome at devotional gatherings, where there may or may not be special classes just for them. There are also children’s classes going on in several city neighborhoods during the week.

What is available beyond devotional gatherings?

We offer study circles, which are small groups of people (usually 4-8) that meet in homes or in locations around town to connect with each other and apply the Bahá’í teachings in a life of service to humanity. They’re also fun. There are a few different study topics going on at any one time. See our calendar for more information.

We also offer Children’s Classes. These classes encourage children to recognize their own nobility and the inherent nobility of their classmates. The children acquire knowledge and spiritual capacities which they can integrate into their everyday lives. Some Children’s classes are combined with devotional gatherings, but there are neighborhood children’s classes going on around the city during the week.

Finally, we offer Junior Youth Empowerment Groups, which are designed for kids between the ages of 11-14. Youth are encouraged to develop a strong sense of purpose, empowering their own transformation and leading them to contribute to the advancement of society. Young people’s spiritual capacity, the basis for their own happiness and sense of well-being, is a powerful force for social change. These Empowerment Groups are going on in different neighborhoods around the city.
